Step Inside.Quick Navigation AOP Residential HVAC (Beenthere Zone) Top Did you really think they put the max size on the equipment just for a suggestion if you feel like it I would be interested in these provisions for larger breakers being allowed if someone wants to post them in the pro section(not that I have ever run into a need for that, but always like learning something new.No No No you DO NOT over size your breaker the max size is the max size thats why its called the max size. My electrical inspector likes the way I do it so it must be ok. I've seen this breaker argument over and over, I like my way and thats the way it's going to be done. now putting a 60 or a 100 on 8 gauge would be cause for concern. That 8 gauge wire doesn't care if you put a 10 amp breaker on it, if it overheats it will trip. IF you have a fused disconnect then it is ok to keep the 40 IF the fuses are 30's. I'm not going to argue over breaker sizing, because I know what i do is proper, but if I have a condenser that calls for a 30 amp max breaker and I have 8 gauge wire I am not going to put in a 40 amp breaker cause that is what the wire calls for. I will gladly stack my skills against yours anyday of the week at fixing problems or coming up with solutions for problems and I guarantee you, I will come out way ahead. It's like NATE certification, it means you can pass a test, it doesn't mean you can fix squat either. It doesn't mean you are any worse or any better than any other person doing this job. It means that you have little pieces of paper or verification of employment in the field. Being a professional member on this site does not mean squat. If somebody is hurt as a result of that or killed, there is a good chance somebody will have criminal charges filed against them. 2 things are going to happen, first being that insurance is going to probably pay for the damage (hopefully), 2nd being that they will then come after you and sue your ass. If that house burns down through a fault of that condenser or has anything to do with that condenser and you have a 40 amp breaker and the condenser says it needs a 30 amp breaker. It tells you exactly what size breaker to use. Read the nameplate, if you know where that is on the condenser. I really hope you are not allowed to work on equipment by yourself.
